Visible veins on the legs are, for many, a cause of embarrassment. They may not pose a serious health threat, but spider veins can lead a person to dress in long pants, or avoid outdoor activities to hide prominent marks on the skin.
Rather than cover up, undergo sclerotherapy in our Plano area dermatology center.
Sclerotherapy has been a longstanding, non-surgical treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. This procedure may be performed by various types of medical professionals. However, in-depth knowledge of veins is needed to produce optimal results. The team at Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery serves patients from Plano, McKinney, Flower Mound, and beyond with expertise and gentle care.
The sclerotherapy procedure is an in-office treatment in which your physician will precisely insert a solution of sodium chloride (sometimes other specialized solutions are used) into unsightly veins. Veins are treated individually with this solution, which causes them to dehydrate and be absorbed into the surrounding tissues. Treatment time will depend on the size and number of veins being treated. Typically, three treatments, six weeks apart are performed for optimal results.
It is important to bring compression stockings on the day of your procedure and to wear the stockings as much as possible for the next three to seven days following the procedure for optimal results. Walking around for the first couple of days and avoiding high impact aerobics are both important as well.
Effects of Sclerotherapy
During treatment of spider veins, mild cramping or stinging may occur. These sensations are short-lived, however, and tend to last only during treatment itself. Following treatment, the areas of injection may appear red and raised for a few days. Other possible side effects include:
- Bruising, lasting from a few days to a few weeks
- Multiple tiny red blue vessels
- Brown spots or streaks near the injection sites, lasting up to six months
- Small skin sores
At Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery, we have the expertise and innovative tools to get rid of unsightly spider veins so you can dive back into life!
