Most children are affected by an itchy rash from time to time. Eczema is different than the occasional rash, though. This condition is chronic, and can be problematic in that irritated, itchy skin that is scratched perpetuates the cycle. Eczema, rather than a singular skin disorder, is a group of conditions that result in the irritation and redness of skin. Some children experience bumps that become oozy from fluid. Children from infancy on can develop an eczema condition, such as infantile eczema.

What is most commonly seen is eczema from atopic dermatitis. This type of skin irritation occurs when one is extremely sensitive to environmental allergens such as certain foods, animal dander, dust, pollens, and molds. A condition that tends to flare up from time to time, eczema has links within a family history, and may be triggered by emotional stress or heat, as well as allergies, although this condition itself is not an allergy.

The development of eczema can be different for every person, with factors such as age and skin type taken into consideration. Children younger than five years of age may develop dry, red skin that becomes itchy. The initial rash may develop on the scalp, forehead, or cheeks, and may spread to the trunk, arms, and legs. Lesions that are red, crusty, or open may also develop. Other signs of eczema include scaly, circular rashes developing on areas such as the ankles or back of wrists, or within bends such as the elbows or knees.

Standard medical treatment for eczema may include topical corticosteroids, which may not always be completely effective. Working with your dermatologist, who has been extensively trained in the specific disorders that affect the skin, you will find an array of advanced forms of treatment for eczema, including light therapy.
