What is Mohs micrographic surgery?

Mohs surgery is a specialized procedure often performed for patients who have been diagnosed with skin cancer either as a repeat occurrence or on an area of the face or body that is highly visible, where sparing tissue is important. This particular treatment has a very high success rate and will reduce the amount of scarring left behind, making it particularly appropriate for cancers that are on the facial area. Additionally, it can get cancers that are deep within the skin while keeping the existing, surrounding healthy skin intact. This is because of the way the procedure is performed. Unlike standard excision, Mohs micrographic surgery is performed layer by layer. It removes a section of cancerous tissues which is then evaluated under a microscope immediately after removal. This allows the surgeon to see the borders of the cancerous skin cells and reduce the amount taken each time. The procedure can go deep within the skin, layer by layer, until all the cancerous cells have been removed. The benefit of this is the ability to keep cancer from reoccurring and provide a high success rate of treatment.

What are the benefits of Mohs micrographic surgery?

This procedure is often chosen by our patients for many reasons. Some of the advantages of this particular treatment are:

  • Effective removal of recurring cancers
  • The ability to maintain as much healthy skin and tissue as possible
  • Deep treatment of skin cancer
  • Less scarring than traditional methods of excision used by dermatologists

Who can perform this treatment?

Not every dermatologist is able to perform Mohs micrographic surgery. This treatment is best performed by Dermatologists with special certification and training The Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery has Board Certified Dermatologists with Mohs certification performing the Mohs surgery.

Am I a candidate for Mohs micrographic surgery?

Some patients may still be best suited for traditional excision. However, during a consultation appointment and evaluation, our team can help individuals in finding out if treatment using the Mohs method is best for their specific needs. Other options include standard excision, radiation therapy, photodynamic therapy, electrodessication and curretage (scrape and burn procedure), cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen), and the use of creams.

Why not excision?

The Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery has Board Certified Dermatologists with Mohs certification performing the Mohs surgery. For some of our patients, excision is not the best way to tackle a recurring area of skin cancer or a new skin cancer in a visble area such as the face. Additionally, patients often experience increased scarring with traditional excisions, especially if the area of cancer is extremely large or in a highly cosmetic area. This is when our team may make a recommendation of Mohs micrographic surgery as a solution to their needs.
