McKinney area dermatologist describes the different types of skin cancer

A skin cancer diagnosis can be a scary situation. However, Dr. Bryan Selkin of McKinney, TX offers screenings, diagnosis, and treatment right in his practice. At the Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery, our staff has years of experience in working with patients throughout the process.

Diagnosis

In patients with risk factors for skin cancer such as sun exposure in the past, or a family history of skin cancer, skin cancer screenings should be performed annually to check for unusual growths that may indicate an issue. Dr. Selkin examines patients from head to toe to check for these areas of concern. Any suspicious mole or lesion can be removed for biopsy. Biopsies are done to check for abnormal or cancerous cells and determine the type present. In some case, the biopsy removes all the abnormal cells and no further treatment is necessary. Many biopsies are a very simple procedure done in the office with minimal recovery, and patients usually go right back to normal activities immediately.

Types of skin cancer

There are many varieties of skin cancer. A biopsy gives the dermatologist more information about the type, to provide effective treatment.

Types of skin cancer include:

  • Basal cell cancer
  • Melanoma
  • Squamous cell skin carcinoma

The most serious variety of cancer is melanoma. It is the one most likely to spread, and is the cause of many deaths each year. Melanoma often presents as a changing mole on the skin. Mole changes or appearances that are outside of the norm should be evaluated by a professional to get a proper diagnosis. Melanoma can be treated by cutting it out (excision), and this is the ideal scenario where it is caught early and can be completely removed. For advanced melanoma, various forms of radiation and chemotherapy are available.

Dr. Selkin, lead dermatologist at the Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery, provides skin cancer screenings as well as diagnosis, treatment, and prevention education.
