Coping with Keratosis Pilaris in Plano

If you have light, tiny bumps scattered along your thighs, upper arms, or even buttocks, you may have Keratosis Pilaris. Affecting nearly half of world’s population, Keratosis Pilaris is a harmless condition, although it can be bothersome for anyone who has it. The unsightly bumps can be very noticeable and can worsen during cold weather months.

Caused by excess keratin that plugs up the hair follicle, the condition is hereditary. It may also be triggered by puberty and can be commonly seen in patients with eczema.

So now that you know what these bumps are called, what can you do about them?

While it is impossible to prevent Keratosis Pilaris, there are steps you can take to minimize the symptoms:

  •  Avoid scratching or rubbing the bumps
  • Replace hot showers with lukewarm water
  • Use generous amounts of moisturizer
  • Use humidifiers in your house

While some people respond to over the counter moisturizers, other patients may need prescription-strength products from a dermatologist. Both topical exfoliants (such as those that contain salicylic acid, urea, or alpha-hydroxy acid) and topical retinoids can improve the appearance of Keratosis Pilaris. Sometimes prescription strength topical steroids are used to calm redness and inflammation down. In some cases, laser treatment, microdermabrasion, or even chemical peels may be used to treat inflammation or redness.

The biggest takeaway for anyone with Keratosis Pilaris is to maintain consistent skin care. By keeping the skin moisturized and using the right products and creams, you can keep Keratosis Pilaris from dramatically affecting your appearance or causing you any itching or pain.
