McKinney patients ask, “What are the best treatments for sun damaged skin?”

Who doesn’t love spending a day out in the sunshine enjoying the beautiful weather? While this may seem like a great idea, the problem is that too much sun exposure can cause the premature aging of the skin. We’re all familiar with the natural aging of the skin, including loss of elasticity and volume along with wrinkles. Sun damage can worsen these natural effects of aging. When the skin ages from sun damage, it can end up looking dry, leathery, discolored, and with deep wrinkles.

Treatments for sun-damaged skin depend on a variety of factors including the extent of the damage, the patient’s age, and the type of skin.

Some of the most common treatments for sun damage include:

Microdermabrasion works by building upon our body’s natural tendency to eliminate or slough off damaged skin. The gentle abrasion technique can remove sun damaged skin cells and stimulate collagen production to yield healthier and more radiant looking skin.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels vary in intensity and work by removing the upper layer of skin. This allows the skin to regenerate and yield a smoother appearance.

Botox is an injectable that can temporary immobilize the muscles that cause wrinkles and lines, particularly on the forehead and around the eyes. This softens the appearance of the face and makes skin look tighter and younger.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers work to help replace the collagen that has been lost in the face due to sun damage or aging. They can “fill in” the areas to erase the appearance of facial lines.

Light Therapy

IPL Light therapy is a non-invasive way to target deep into the skin. The light spectrum targets pigment and it can help lighten and even the texture.

Laser Therapy

Laser resurfacing uses high-energy light waves to minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The down time is minimal, and the results are maximal!

If your time out in the sun has led your skin to make you look older than you are, contact your McKinney area dermatology center today to find out more about the available treatment options for sun damage.
