Vein Treatments

In the past few decades, advances in medical science have allowed us to incorporate lasers into various procedures.

Nd:YAG laser for vein treatment

Vein treatment with this specialized laser raises the temperature of blood vessels in the veins, causing coagulation to occur. Over time, the veins treated with customized care will shrink until they completely disappear. This form of laser vein therapy, performed in our dermatology facility in Plano, is even suitable for veins that have been unresponsive to other forms of treatment.

Is a laser vein treatment right for me?

Treating veins with laser technology is both safe and effective. People of all ages can safely undergo laser vein treatment, as can people of various skin tones, from light to dark.

Alternative treatment may be necessary for those who:
  • Take blood-thinning medication
  • Are affected by serious illness
  • Are deeply tanned
  • Have diabetes or a bleeding disorder
  • Are taking medications that cause photosensitivity

Treatment details

Laser vein treatment, which can be effective on most small vein disorders, is typically completed in 15 to 30 minutes, based on the size of the treatment area. Following customized treatment, regular activities can be immediately resumed, with only mild discomfort likely. In order to minimize side effects, which can include mild bruising and swelling, we recommend that sun exposure be limited for a day or two following treatment.

Will Laser Therapy be effective on my veins?

This form of vein therapy is highly effective on most small vein issues, including reticular veins and spider veins.

Spider veins are those small clusters of blue, purple, or red webs that tend to occur on the lower extremities. These tiny bundles occur when internal pressure is greater than the normal resistance of the vein wall. Seemingly affected by fluctuating levels of estrogen, spider veins tend to be more common in women.

Reticular veins appear blue in color, and are larger than spider veins. The walls of reticular veins tend to be thin, and they will dilate under great pressure. These dilated veins can be cosmetically bothersome, but are not the same as varicose veins in nature.

Laser vein treatment is customized to each patient. Depending on the size of affected veins, number of veins, and your own ability to heal, multiple treatments may be necessary for total elimination of unsightly veins. Your dermatologist will make an estimate during your initial consultation.
