Plano, TX area patients ask, “What is rosacea and what causes it?”

06/22/17 | by admin | Categories: Rosacea

Treatment for Rosacea from Dr. Bryan SelkinRosacea is a skin condition that affects millions of Americans. It is most common in middle-aged women with fair skin, but anyone can develop it. Dr. Bryan Selkin and the staff of the Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery in Plano see patients regularly for diagnosis and treatment. Many patients who have been diagnosed ask what causes rosacea.

Rosacea explained

Presently, researchers do not know the specific cause of rosacea. They have been unable to determine why this skin disorder develops. However, Dermatologists can properly diagnosis it and provide patients with effective treatment options.

How is rosacea treated?

Once diagnosed, treatment may include:

  • Laser and light therapy for redness and pimples
  • Topical creams for redness and pimples
  • Antibiotics for pimples and pustules
  • Proper skin care to decrease inflammation
  • Preventatives (sunscreen)

Rosacea is often noticed as redness on the skin that does not subside. It can develop small pus-filled pimples, which causes it to be improperly diagnosed as acne. However, redness, swelling, broken blood vessels, and in more severe cases, itchy and red eyes may continue. Many patients attribute their eye symptoms to “allergies” when in reality, rosacea is the culprit.

With a proper diagnosis, Dr. Selkin makes recommendations for treatment to reduce symptoms and give patients back their confidence! Our practice offers a variety of solutions, providing patients with a care that works best. There is no “one size fits all” treatment for our patients with rosacea, so sometimes trial and error is needed to find the most effective solution for each unique individual.
